Overview
Apoaequorin is a protein that is extracted from a type of glowing jellyfish. When apoaequorin is exposed to calcium, protein and calcium bind, creating a bluish light. Therefore, scientists have used apoaequorin to study the properties of calcium.
The synthetic version is added to nootropic supplements because it’s considered to improve memory and mental functioning. In addition, it can enhance the quality of your sleep.
One of the top companies that make apoaequorin is ‘Quincy Bioscience’ and the product is called Prevagen.

How Does It Work | The Science Behind Apoaequorin
Researchers believe that calcium regulation in the brain may play a role in preventing mental decline and improve memory.
There are other studies that indicate that in fact, Apoaequorin is digested in the stomach and never ever gets to the brain.
According to the American Pharmacists Association, apoaequorin most likely will not be absorbed, instead, it will separate into individual proteins called amino acids. Once separated into amino acids, the body will use them the same as the amino acids from food sources.
In 2017, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) filed a complaint with the company “Quincy Bioscience” because there was reason the company may have false advertising claims.
Currently, there is insufficient evidence to recommend apoaequorin for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS, Lou Gehrg’s disease), to increase mental function and other conditions.
A company-sponsored study called the Madison Memory Study tested the product for its effectiveness. The study had 218 participants between the ages of 40-91 years who had memory problems. The results of the study showed improvements in memory among participants.
Although, the research study report had many issues and non-standardized assessment techniques were used.
Apoaequorin Ingredients – What to Look For?
This is not a supplement, it’s an individual ingredient. This substance is derived from a jellyfish. Apoaequorin is a protein that’s found inside the Aequorea Victoria species of jellyfish.
Note: In 2012, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) labeled this product as a drug.

Upset my stomach somewhat. Stopped taking it.
I’m not really sure how much it does. It upset my stomach somewhat. I was willing to take it just in case. But the cost is prohibitive. I gave it 2 stars because I couldn’t bring myself to totally trash someone’s product and I stopped taking it.
May cause side effects!
After taking these products for about 30 days, I had a grand mal seizure, while driving. I’ve never had a seizure or any neurological disorder before in my life. I am a fit healthy 50 yr old female. In doing research, I found that side effects found in test studies included seizures and strokes. Because this product is over-the-counter, the manufacturer apparently does not have to report this information.
I would not try this again.....
I have taken nootropics since the beginning. I am to the point to find the best or my money. The ones that are good twice the price. This one had gotten great reviews. Thought I would give it a try. It did really nothing for me. Just not a jerk to put a one-star. Definitely save your money. I would not try this again.
