The Science Behind Biofreeze

Biofreeze works using a mechanism known as gate control theory[2]. That is, the menthol content present in the formula works as a counterirritant that diverts attention from the pain points.

Usually, pain results from the simulation of two different types of fibers and is relieved when a tactile stimulation is applied to the same spot.

The manufacturer further explains that, when you apply Biofreeze on the affected area, the menthol stimulates the skin’s thermoreceptors bringing in a cooling sensation.

This, in turn, stimulates the nerves that do not cause pain (non-nociceptive nerve fibers) which in a sense is what completes the counterirritant mechanism that reduces pain.

One review says, “I have bought several of Biofreeze pump foam products. On 4 occasions, I have had to return the Biofreeze products to the store where it was purchased (CVS) because the pump would not produce the expected foam. Instead, I would get a watery mess that I could not use my applicator with. What is the issue and is there a better selection to use with a roller applicator?” ~ by John Wilshire

    Amazing, quick relief for sciatica

I’ve had an almost debilitating bout of sciatica this week, in tears each night. Rolled on Biofreeze gel, the relief was immediate.

A bit on pricey side for me .

This product has the ingredient as Menthol only which isn’t relieving for cervical pain and its too too much expensive without any relief from pain. Does not recommend this.
