RYZE Mushroom Coffee Review: Does This Adaptogenic Coffee Blend Live Up to Its Wellness Claims?

The RYZE Mushroom Coffee is a functional coffee product made by RYZE that also has reduced caffeine compared to regular coffee and is formulated to provide energy, focus, digestive and immune benefits as part of your daily routine. The formula combines organic instant coffee, a 2,000 mg proprietary SUPER6™ Mushroom Blend containing Cordyceps, Lion’s Mane, Reishi, Shiitake, Turkey Tail, and King Trumpet mushrooms, and a prebiotic fiber blend. The brand claims 50 mg of caffeine, 2 grams of dietary fiber, being USDA Organic and having no added sugar make RYZE more than just your average cup of coffee.

However, is the proprietary mushroom combination of 2,000 mg a sufficient amount of each mushroom? Can it really boost energy, concentration, digestion and the immune system like regular coffee? Is there any research or studies published around the whole RYZE Mushroom Coffee formula?

Let’s take a look at RYZE Mushroom Coffee’s formulation, scientific evidence of its ingredients, and marketing claims, then compare it with Kaffico Vitality Mushroom Coffee and Kaffico Molten Caramel Coffee.>

RYZE Mushroom Coffee Ingredient Analysis

The RYZE Mushroom Coffee powder in each serving (6 g) is a source of:

• Organic SUPER6™ Mushroom Blend 2,000mg
• Organic Instant Coffee
• Organic Prebiotic Blend (Acacia Fiber, Inulin Fiber, Tapioca Fiber)
• The amount of caffeine is about 50mg.
• 2 g dietary fiber

The formula highlights its proprietary SUPER6™ Mushroom Blend with 2,000 mg of a blend of Lion’s Mane, Cordyceps, Reishi, Turkey Tail, Shiitake, and King Trumpet mushrooms. An NIH study shows each of these mushrooms has been individually researched for cognitive, immune, stress adaptation and exercise benefits.^[1] However, because the blend is proprietary, the exact amount of each mushroom is not disclosed, making scientific comparisons difficult.

Lion’s Mane is one of the most researched mushrooms in the formula. A PubMed study has indicated that standardized extracts of Lion’s Mane can improve memory and cognitive function, especially in older adults with mild cognitive impairment. But most of these studies were conducted with certain doses for weeks.^[2] The exact amount of Lion’s Mane present in the blend is not provided by RYZE, making it hard to determine if the product contains a clinically equivalent dose.

The formula also contains Cordyceps, and research says this is a mushroom that is popular for energy and exercise performance.^[3] There are conflicting clinical research results. Modest increase in aerobic capacity and fatigue have been reported in some research, but scarcely observed in others. Like Lion’s Mane, the dosage of Cordyceps is crucial, and the RYZE dosage is unknown.

The beta-glucans and polysaccharides found in Reishi, Turkey Tail and Shiitake appear to be the main constituents of interest and a PubMed study shows their ability to promote normal immune function.^[4] The majority of the published scientific literature, however, has examined extracts of mushrooms and not mushroom formulas that are blended into coffee. So, even though there is promising evidence for the benefits of using these ingredients separately, RYZE Mushroom Coffee does not guarantee the same benefits.

There is also King Trumpet mushroom in the formula, but when compared with Lion’s Mane and Reishi, relatively little human clinical research has been done to assess the therapeutic properties of King Trumpet mushroom. There is limited available evidence from laboratory and animal studies that examine its antioxidant and nutritional properties.

The other key ingredient is an organic prebiotic blend>, which is composed of acacia fiber, inulin fiber, and tapioca fiber. An NIH study shows prebiotic fibre support of the beneficial bacteria in gut health.^[5] Inulin and acacia fiber have been shown to help balance the gut microbiome in the long-term. The product does not specify the dose of each fiber, however, so it is hard to compare to doses used in clinical studies.

The RYZE also contains around 50 milligrams of caffeine which is about half of the amount in regular coffee. The lower levels of caffeine could be preferable for people who are sensitive to caffeine or who get jittery when they drink it, but may still give them a mild boost of energy.

In general, RYZE Mushroom Coffee is a combination of a few of the popular functional mushrooms, as well as a prebiotic fibre in a simple formula. Moderate use of USDA Organic ingredients and added dietary fiber are pluses. The proprietary mushroom formula, however, due to both the individual mushroom amounts not being disclosed, and the absence of published clinical trials of the final formula, it is not possible to quantify whether the formula contains the same amounts of mushrooms and produces the same benefits as reported in the individual mushroom extract studies.

Scientific Evidence

With a combination of functional mushrooms, organic coffee and prebiotic fiber, RYZE Mushroom Coffee is said to boost energy, concentration, digestion, immune health, and overall health and wellbeing.

While many single-ingredient studies were done, no clinical trials were found where the RYZE Mushroom Coffee formula was evaluated.
This difference matters.

Studies of the benefits of Lion’s Mane, Cordyceps, Reishi, Turkey Tail or prebiotic fibers are not necessarily applicable to the same results when combined in proprietary mushroom coffee Factors that influence the effectiveness of the finished product are:

• Ingredient dosage
• Extract quality
• Bioavailability
• Formula composition
• Duration of use
• Individual health status

For example:

• An NIH study has shown that standardized Lion’s Mane extracts, taken at known doses for several weeks, may improve certain aspects of cognitive function.^[5] The amount of Lion’s Mane in its proprietary blend is not disclosed by RYZE, making it difficult to compare with the published clinical research.
• Research on Cordyceps has produced mixed results. Research showed small benefits in exercise capacity and fatigue, and others showed small or no significant benefits.^[6] Results seem to be dose- and extract-dependent.
• The health promoting effects of prebiotic fibers like inulin and acacia fiber are primarily found under clinically studied quantities, ones which are not included in RYZE.
• Ingredient-level studies have found Reishi, turkey tail and shiitakes to have immune supporting properties, but a lot of this research has been on concentrated mushroom extracts, not on proprietary mushroom coffee formulations.

The science behind RYZE Mushroom Coffee is therefore largely ingredient-level science and not published clinical studies of the actual commercial product.

Marketing Claims That Need More Context

RYZE Mushroom Coffee makes several broad wellness claims regarding energy, focus, digestion, immunity, and calm, sustained energy.

While many of these claims are based on promising research surrounding functional mushrooms and prebiotic fibers, we believe some extend beyond the publicly available evidence supporting the finished product.

“Better Energy Without the Crash”

The manufacturer claims that RYZE delivers long-lasting energy without the jitters or crashes that regular coffee can cause.

With about 50mg of caffeine, RYZE will likely have a less intense caffeine effect than coffee. Some people may be less likely to get jitters if they reduce their caffeine consumption.

We didn’t, however, find any published clinical studies that prove RYZE consistently releases more long-lasting energy or reduces energy crashes in comparison to regular coffee. Each person will also react in their own distinctive way, depending on tolerance to caffeine and lifestyle.

In our opinion, this claim would be stronger if supported by controlled human trials comparing RYZE directly with conventional coffee.

“Improves Focus and Mental Clarity”
The company also promotes improved focus through its combination of Lion’s Mane and coffee.

Research on Lion’s Mane has shown encouraging results for cognitive function in certain populations, particularly older adults with mild cognitive impairment.^[7] However, these studies generally used standardized Lion’s Mane extracts at known doses.

Since RYZE does not disclose the amount of Lion’s Mane contained within its proprietary mushroom blend, we believe it is difficult to determine whether the product provides a clinically comparable amount. We also found no published studies evaluating cognitive performance using the finished RYZE formula.

“Supports Digestion and Gut Health”
According to RYZE, their prebiotic fiber blend can help promote gastrointestinal health and gut flora.

When taken regularly, prebiotic fibre like inulin and acacia fibre are fibre-based and have been found to support beneficial gut bacteria.

The brand doesn’t state the quantities of each prebiotic ingredient, however, so it can be hard to compare the dose with those used in other published clinical studies. There may also be individual differences in digestion, especially for those who are sensitive to higher fibre diets.

“Supports Immune Health”
The formula also supports the immune system with mushrooms such as Reishi, Turkey Tail, Shiitake and Lion’s Mane.

These mushrooms contain biologically active compounds, particularly beta-glucans, that have been investigated for immune-supporting properties.

Most of the published studies, however, have examined extracts instead of proprietary mushroom coffee formulations. This we feel could be more easily substantiated with further investigation into the product.

“Six Adaptogenic Mushrooms Work Together”
One of its advantages over traditional coffee beans, according to the manufacturer, is its mix of six functional mushrooms.

Having several mushrooms could deliver a wider spectrum of bioactive compounds. The blend is proprietary, however, and consumers are unable to know what proportion of each mushroom is included in the mixture.

We believe a disclosure of the exact proportions of mushrooms in the formula would make it easier to compare against published clinical research.

Our Verdict on the Marketing Claims

Several of RYZE Mushroom Coffee’s marketing claims are based on legitimate research surrounding functional mushrooms, prebiotic fibers, and moderate caffeine intake.

However, in our opinion, many of the broader promises involving energy, focus, digestion, and immune support rely more heavily on ingredient-level evidence than on published clinical studies of the finished product. We found no clinical trials evaluating RYZE Mushroom Coffee itself.

We believe RYZE Mushroom Coffee should be considered as a functional coffee with some beneficial compounds for wellness; not a clinically tested cognitive, digestive or immune supplement. Many of the brand’s claims would be easier to assess if further finished product research was conducted and there was more transparency of the proprietary mushroom blend.

Kaffico Vitality Mushroom Coffee

Kaffico Vitality Mushroom Coffee is made with 90% roasted Arabica coffee, 5% organic Lion’s Mane powder and 5% organic Chaga mushroom powder. Unlike RYZE’s proprietary six-mushroom blend, Kaffico clearly identifies the two functional mushrooms used and their proportions, making the formula easier to understand and evaluate. The brand claims it is a regular coffee, offering sustainable energy, focus and overall well-being without losing the taste of real coffee.

We believe that Kaffico is simpler and more transparent than RYZE Mushroom Coffee. The mushrooms and prebiotic fibers found in RYZE are combined in a proprietary formula, whereas Kaffico concentrates on two of the most widely studied functional mushrooms that support cognitive function and have antioxidant properties: Lion’s Mane and Chaga. We believe that Kaffico Vitality Mushroom Coffee is a better choice for consumers who want to know exactly what is in their coffee and aren’t afraid of a proprietary mix.

Kaffico Molten Caramel Coffee is a 100% Arabica dark roast coffee made from coffee beans from Brazil, Mexico and Guatemala. It is not like RYZE because it does not contain any functional mushrooms or prebiotic fibers. Rather, it concentrates on offering pure energy, mental concentration, and an indulgent coffee journey with high quality, bold, cocoa and caramel accented Arabica beans.

Kaffico Molten Caramel Coffee is a totally different take on RYZE Mushroom Coffee! It does not focus on adaptogens and functional wellness ingredients, but rather quality, taste and the traditional “coffee wake-up.” We feel Kaffico Molten Caramel Coffee is the more superior option for coffee drinkers looking for a rich, dark roast, with natural energy, while RYZE is better suited for coffee drinkers who are specifically interested in functional mushrooms and digestive support.

There are several ingredients that have individually been effective in scientific research and are included in the formula, including Lion’s Mane, Cordyceps, Reishi, and prebiotic fibers.

The proprietary mushroom formulation does not provide the concentration of each mushroom and it is difficult to compare the product to published clinical studies. There were also no clinical trials to assess the completed RYZE Mushroom Coffee formula.

In general, RYZE might be a good choice for individuals seeking a lower caffeine functional coffee, but the additional health benefits of the product should be considered with some reservation until clinical studies are published that specifically target these benefits.
