The link between menopause and insomnia

Menopause tends to be a challenging time for most women. It becomes much worse when they lie awake wondering where their quality of life has disappeared. Thus menopause and insomnia can make your life uncomfortable at a time when you should be winding down and enjoying your middle years.

menopause and insomniaThere is a definite link between menopause and insomnia. The fact remains that the main cause of sleep disturbances is hot flashes. These hot flashes vary from barely noticeable to quite incapacitating where our bodies become drenched in sweat. The best way to sleep well then is by lessening the impact of these hot flashes.

Thus, women have been trying the hormone replacement therapy (HRT) in order to lessen their menopause and insomnia symptoms. Due to the side effects of HRT, many women decided to stop taking it and have been taking a herbal remedy ever since.

But hot flashes are not the only cause of menopause and insomnia. The anxiety which at times comes with menopause can also be a major cause of lost sleep. Women who are going through menopause may notice that their sleep has become fragmented, which makes them wake up frequently during the night. A part of this can be blamed on hot flashes, but this may also be caused by the mind racing, which tends to make deep sleep difficult.

The best way to deal with menopause and insomnia is to deal with the symptoms of menopause as best as we can. Else, there remains a real danger of sleep problems remaining for long even after the menopause has departed. In fact, stress and anxiety which is associated with menopause and insomnia can be handled by a complex approach. Exercise is one great way in order to relax the body as well as to help us sleep at night. Rather, it’s always better to exercise in the morning as far as sleep is concerned. This is because the sunlight is able to set our circadian rhythm for the day.
